Okay, so clearly it has been a while since I last posted on this blog, but here it goes. I have been in China for about a month and a half now, and am finall feeling a little bit settled in my job and apartment. I live off campus in a large flat on a large estate about 15 minutes from school by bus. I seem to be the only foreigner for miles and miles, which was a little bit hard for me, but is also something I am getting used to. At least I know that my Chinese can't possibly be getting worse!
So here is the breakdown. Shenzhen is a huge place, and it has six districts and many small towns in it. I live in Bao'an district (宝安区) in a town called Longhua (龙华). Shockingly, the school I teach at is called Longhua Middle School (龙华中学). In China, middle school and high school are all called the same thing (中学), but the students are divided up into Juniors and Seniors. I am teaching Junior 1s and Senior 1s. It is going well, although I still get nervous before each class, like I am right now for my class that starts in 30 minutes. I am teaching the Juniors this week, and they are much less calm that the Seniors, also their English isn't as good, which is to be expected.
This past weekend I taught my first private lesson. This is an unofficial way for us to earn some extra cash, and fill some of the free time of which most of us foreigh teachers have an abundance. The kids I teach are in Primary school, which is kind of fun and a new challenge. The vocab and lesson can be much more basic, but it can be harder to keep them interested. We'll see how it goes.
This upcoming weekend, I plan to go down to Dongmen in the Luohu district, and hopefully come up with some idea for a Halloween costume. Wish me luck!
